100+ American Pop Standards

This is a list of the Top 100 Pop Standards composed by American songwriters. To Identify a Pop Standard there needs to be a definition.  Since the advent of Rock 'n' Roll the idea of new pop standards has generally been dismissed.  It can be clearly argued there have been new Pop Standards written and performed since the mid fifties. This is the Great American Songbook of the Electrofied Era.

Definition of Pop Standard -- American music written and recorded since the invention of the phonograph, but most notably from the advent of World War I to the mid 1950's which have seen recurring popularity.  The Golden Age of Pop Standards are most associated by stage and screen songs pinned by Paul Dresser, George M. Cohan, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Rogers & Hart, Hoagy Carmichael and others.

Electrofied Era Pop Standard -- American music with enduring popularity that is not clearly defined or solely associated with other genres, and with less emphasis on the songwriter and more on the performer.  The post mid 50's Pop Standard follows in the traditions (songs from stage, screen and television)  and style of the Pop Standards of the first half of the 20th. century, but are enriched by synthesizers, electric guitars and other electric instruments and enhanced by electronics in the modern recording studio.

The Five periods of The American Pop Standard.
     1. 1877 - 1914  Birth and formative years
     2. 1914 - 1940  The Golden Age - Conception period (1927-39 Gestation period for Electrofied Era)
     3. 1940 - 1955  The Golden Age - Early Electrofied period
     4. 1955 - 1990  The Electrofied Era - Established Electrofied Era
     5. 1991 - Present  The Electrofied Era - Cloud Period (mp3 internet download and cloud storage)

The best Pop Standards from the "Electrofied Era", 1940 to the present. The "Electrofied Era" is the result of the profound impact of electricity and electronics on the writing, creation, performance, recording, dissemination, and storage of music. It transcends all genres by encompassing them.

      100 Most Important American Songs

About The List
All songs are written by Americans or co-written by an American and a foreign national.  Performances are by Americans except where noted.  This list is the "New American Songbook - Electrofied Era".  The selections and ranking are made on continued popularity based on recordings.  Many songs predate the "Electrofied Era" but continue to find popularity.  An example is the melody to "Love Me Tender" which dates back to the American Civil War.  The song "Stardust" one of the most recorded songs of all time dates back to the mid 1920's but has not seen a significant uptick in popularity for the last two decades, but is still recognized by millions.  How music popularity is measured has undergone extensive changes as there has been a constant adding of new media (records, radio, TV, and the Internet) and how music is used, from commercials to ringtones.  A song like "Hawaii Five-O"  finds its popularity rooted in a multitude of places and uses.  The song can be heard most any Friday or Saturday night at half-time played by high school and collegiate marching bands/pep bands across America.  It is heard as the theme song to the TV show Hawaii Five-O and in (50 First Dates and Madagascar) motion pictures.  It also sells well on CD's, played by rock and Big Bands at parties, on radio, and can be heard as a ringtone.  Then there are questions about songs like "My Way" which can be traced back to Europe.  Paul Anka (Canadian born/Naturalized U.S. citizen)  clearly took a European (French) song and rewrote it, providing not only new lyrics but also making changes to the melody. A song making this list is not based solely on record/internet download sales or chart history. Other considerations take into account as to who recorded the song and most recent recordings and usage.  These and other factors are considered.  This list is not scientifically prepared, but great consideration and time has gone into trying to determine which songs are the most relevant.

Songs that did not make the top 100, but deserve recognition.

  1. Love the list. How about 'What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life' ? Barbara Streisand and I'm sure others.

    1. Thank you. It is a great Standard and many have recorded it. It was written by Michael Legrand of France. The English lyrics were written by Americans, Alan & Marilyn Bergman. Because the song is French it is on http://http//100foreignpopstandardsongsinamerica.blogspot.com/ and now can be found at the bottom of the blog. The site is known as "100+ Top Pop Standards In America From Around The World".

  3. "My Funny Valentine" - It along with other songs have been over looked. Like with this song I am open to suggestions. This song has been added to the list and more work will be done on it.
